Summer programs at Learning Alternatives

854532fa-aa3d-4566-80ea-83aeb5545416

This April, in our summer program at Learning Alternatives, we want to work with a small group of children on a few things that we believe will really make a difference.

With the older children (10+ years) we plan to work on a social action project. This project based learning program will help children sharpen their problem solving and expressive skills in a real world context. Site visit, debate, news analysis, presentation, putting together a street theatre performance etc are some of the key elements of this program. Above all, the program aims to instill in children the belief that they can make a difference.

The project timings are from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, weekdays, April 2 to 27th.

For younger children( 3 to 9 years) in April we have programs that has to do with creating things with clay and other materials, retelling stories and recreating them with puppets and on stage, having lots of fun playing…

In May (2nd to 11th), we have a 10 day camp exclusively for children with special needs.

You’ll find more about us at www.learningalternatives.in and www.facebook.com/la.learningalternatives

Reading keeps us happy at schoolkutti on Saturday mornings. This weekend’s read aloud choice was the book ‘Lion Goes for a Haircut’ from Tulika Publishers. We enjoyed this delightful story and had fun discussing some amusing anecdotes about hair cutting saloons, hair style preferences and lions in general.

After finishing the book, the listeners were asked to guess other possible endings to the story. There were some laugh-out-loud moments when children came up with wild ideas like the hair stylist giving the lion a fantastic hair cut, requesting him to be a model for his saloon and even explaining the concept of reflection to him.

Children are naturally curious. Children are natural problem solvers. Children also have a lot of pent up energy. The way they usually spend this energy is by breaking something at home while trying to learn the workings of certain gadgets.
Tinkering helps channelize this energy into creative scientific explorations by not only cementing the knowledge that they already have but also helping in gaining more skills in the process.
Tinkering and making experiences support fundamental S.T.E.M thinking and learning leading to more confident, focused, proactive learners who have the ability to deal with temporary failures on the way to ultimate success.
Benefits: Problem solving, creative thinking, Skills development
At our maker space, the first of its kind in Trivandrum, we give real world open-ended problems for children to solve. Using the basic items and components available, they have to come up with a working solution for these problems.

Story Treat

Today’s story treat at Word Play was the awesome picture book from MsMoochie – ‘Frank Goes To The Market’. Our little readers just loved the concept, humour, story and most of all, the charming illustrations. We discussed the importance of staying close to one’s parents in a crowded place and also how to handle the situation if they do get lost in spite of being careful. After attempting some interesting picture puzzles and activities, we went on to enjoy some fun facts.

Imaginations were running wild when we read the book ‘What If You Had Animal Hair?’ by Sandra Markle – a great informative-narrative which made kids wonder what it would be like if their own hair was replaced by those of a different animal.

There were squeals of glee and cheeky laughter as we jingled all the way on Saturday evening at the library during the ‘Jingle Bells Storytime’ listening to the awesome narration of the story ‘Father Christmas on the Naughty Step’ by Bina Maria Mathews . It was a lively and fun story to get children into the Christmas spirit. The story experience was made extra special with fun Christmas songs, dance and craft. The joyous occasion also marked the 4th birthday celebration of Schoolkutti.com Children’s Library. Kids and parents enjoyed delicious whole-wheat X’mas and Birthday special butter cake prepared with love by our healthy-yummy cake baking expert, Ritu Bhatt

On kindness, sitting still and more…

Last weekend, our delightful little readers at Schoolkutti.com Children’s Library had a great time listening to the Chinese story ‘The Grateful Snake’ from the book ‘Story told around the world’. This story teaches about small acts of kindness to the importance of being a true friend.

After the story time, the kids worked on a few spelling puzzles. Then, we had lots of fun doing a role play based on the well-loved favorite ‘Pied Piper of Hamelin’, that was decidedly unprepared and natural. It was lovely to see the children expressing without inhibitions and communicating in their own words.

During the read-it-yourself time, the children enjoyed the adventures of the super active girl Viji from the book ‘Sit Still’ by Karishma Mahbubani with illustrations by Suzzanne Rebello. They could easily relate to this girl with boundless energy, due to reasons that need not be explained 🙂

Some of the kids got so excited that they even went on to strike some yoga poses to show us how flexible and strong they were.

Finally, they took turns to read and discuss some interesting facts about polar bears.

The children were such amazing and attentive listeners at our Word Play Story Time this week at the Schoolkutti.com Children’s Library. Today we chose a delightful book with beautiful illustrations titled “Mangoes and Mischief” by Sreedevi Gopakumar and Sahitya Rani from Ms.Moochie publishing house.

What a fun time we had discussing Moidutty’s love for mangoes, Malu’s superb aim, the muddle the kids get into because of stealing mangoes, the various mango based treats and about how they make friends with the interesting monster Maangasura!

This time, we introduced a fun twist on the “Guess My Word” game, by making each child provide a word which the others had to guess. Kids loved getting to play the “teacher” by giving out clues.

Next, we went on to do some role play based on the book ‘The Very Big Pancake’.

All our little champs had a blast acting out as the seven hungry children who chase a huge yummy pancake.
