Saturday Story Time @ Schoolkutti

Reading and playing with our little readers brings us so much joy. Last Saturday we had fun reading the story of a lion who went for a feast at Muthumama and Mathumami’s house. The old couple prepared the feast, but they could not resist having the feast themselves. We had a good laugh imagining the hiding couple and the lion searching for them in anger. The narrative style of building up suspense at the end of every page is very interesting and made the kids crave more. The children had fun debating on how to end the story in this book. We found the illustrations beautiful and a true feast for the senses. We also had a small discussion about the South Indian dishes like dosas, sambar and chutney from the story. After the story session, we also made colorful lions with craft papers.

Storytime

For last Saturday’s story time, we chose a wonderful book about the sustainable relationship between human beings and the environment. The tale ‘Bumoni’s banana tree’ is set on the outskirts of a National Park in rural Assam. Bumoni and her family have a big backyard full of banana trees. They make full use of the banana trees for making food items and a lot more. One night, a herd of elephants crosses the river and gorges on the bananas and tramples the trees. Bumoni and her family manage to chase away the wild elephants, but Bumoni is worried about the elephants. Finally, she comes up with a great idea that allows the elephants to have their feast without destroying any crops.

Even though the children felt sorry for the elephants, they were delighted that the elephants could have their feast in their own homes. It is important for the next generation to understand and appreciate the need to resolve human-animal conflicts with empathy and coexist in harmony. The children discussed the different snacks that are made from bananas and what their favorites are. For the craft session, we made paper elephants and the kids were eager to name their elephants.

Schoolkutti.com Children’s Library ‘s Summer Camp Programme for 2023

Schoolkutti.com Children’s Library ‘s summer camp programme for 2023 began in the final week of March and wrapped up on the 25th of May. The beauty of our summer camp was that we got to meet a lot of young kids with diverse interests and dislikes who were all brought together as a group, making these three months more than simply a summer camp session but also a blend of friendship, love, sharing, and caring that made us all feel like a “family.” There were times when students cheered and clapped for their buddies and gave them methods and ideas to help them win the game. Despite minor disagreements over games, they are the best buddies in the room. One of the events where we could all connect with our ideas and feelings via stories was our story club session. We could see their expressions alter as the tempo of the narrative changed, and the background music played an important role in establishing an environment that made the kids feel like they were truly within the story. They discussed their feelings, ideals, and the effects of the characters on the plot. The children also adorned the story club with their art and craft projects, making it more exciting and realistic. Also, following the story club, they were racing to the book section of our library to be the first to get the next series of the book featured in our story club, and we believe that our camp session has impacted kids to consider reading as one of their favourite hobbies. We feel that our summer camp session benefited the kids in discovering what they want to do and enjoy the most by establishing memories and making a lot of friends, and we are grateful to know that we were a part of some of their enjoyable moments that they will remember for a long time
